to everyone: has it ever occurred to you that the leaves don't just die by themselves; they're actually killed by the tree.
in autumn, the connection between the branch and the leaf stem is severed, so the leaf ceases to get the water and the substances it needs for functioning from the tree. that causes the disintegration of chlorophyl (other pigments are more stable), hence the change of colour. eventually, the leaf dies and falls off.
nothing romantic about it, eh?
but a fitting survival technique for the deciduous trees...

Hey, Polona!:) This is physics!
But there is also such a thing as metaphysics!:) A much older science about things invisible, matters beyond mere physics, which will, am sure, survive physics!:)
This is an abstract statement. Don’t take it personally. I’m glad you posted your second comment because it makes me think!:) Again, it’s just an idea from Mesoamerican shamanic circles (shared by many other metaphysical traditions). Life is mysterious, incomprehensible. Man will never be able to really understand it. Thus, to try to reduce something so mysteriously incomprehensible to a manageable series of logical statements that reason can understand at any particular moment of the development of is limited knowledge can lead to sheer stupidity and to acts disconnected from cosmic whole. To see trees and leaves as symbols is at least as legitimate as to see them as object of scientific study. I hope our friend Tikkis will forgive me for paraphrasing his comment to Crazy Ronin’s ‘raindrops’ haiku: I'm not a 'scientist' but connections with river-floods & human affairs i have found!:)

masago: hmmm to what? :)

borut: this is biology and chemistry rather than physics. :)
but i know what you mean, and i agree that there's more to life than just scientific definitions.
i see a similarity between trees and the legendary phoenix who burns himself only to rise from the ashes.
